A conservative nation with outstanding vocal talent, Tonga’s music experiences are unlike other destinations. Stunning choirs at churches offer goosebump-raising sounds — a capella or accompanied by brass bands. Visitors are welcome.
Traditional instruments — including the nose flute, skin drum, conch shell horn and pan pipes — are reserved for special occasions. However, Radio Tonga starts each day with Honourable Ve’ehala, a nose flute expert.
String bands and soaring harmonies are found at feasts and some cultural shows.
Tonga’s chaste outlooks means bars and nightclubs are low-key, and restricted to tourist-orientated locations. However, Friday night revelries show locals make the most of limited opportunities.
On Tongatapu, take in live music at The Waterfront Cafe, Billfish Bar and Restaurant or Captain Bligh’s Cabin Bar. The Blue Pacific Nightclub is Tonga’s hippest dance venue.
On Vava’u, Mermaid Bar and Tapana Resort host live music, while Puataukanave Nightclub attracts a cool crowd.
